The automotive industry in Japan is one of the most prominent and largest industries in the world. Japan has been amongst the Top 3 car manufacturing countries since 1960. The Auto Industry exploded in 1970s and 80s for both domestic market and worldwide export. In 1980s & 90s the island nation overtook US to become the world’s largest Automotive market. Presently it is the at number 3 position behind China and US. Japanese Car have worldwide influence and Japan produced cars are widely exported across the world. So let’s begin with first of the Big 3
Toyota
No surprises here. Toyota is the amongst the largest car manufacturer in the world. It is 2nd to Volkswagen AG. Toyota was started by Kiichiro Toyoda in 1937 as a spinoff from his father’s business which was into automatic looms. Toyota now has gone to become Japan’s largest company. Toyota in Japan is so big that there is a city named after it Toyota City, Aichi. Today, Toyota is a market leader not only in traditional cars but also in sales of hybrid electric vehicles and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles. It was the first manufacturer to produce 10 million cars in 2012. This is worth mentioning as this was after the devastating 2011 Tsunami). Toyota cars are universal. It is so popular that the US agencies had to call in investigation to understand why ISIS the terrorist organisation has so many Toyota? This speaks volumes for Toyota’s reliability and user friendliness. Toyota has long been recognized as an Industry leader in manufacturing and production. just in time and lean manufacturing are some of the concept’s of Toyota Production system (TPS), which are widely accepted and implemented in Automotive manufacturing industry. Toyota owns high end luxury brand Lexus, commercial vehicle manufacturer Hino, Daihatsu. Toyota Corolla is the world best selling car ever. The next company in Japan’s Big 3 is Nissan.
Nissan
Nissan is another popular Japanese brand. Nissan was started in 1933 by Yoshisuke Aikawa along with others. Nissan was world 5th largest car manufacturer in 2019. In 1999, Nissan facing severe financial crisis joined hands with Renault to form Renault Nissan alliance. In 2016, Mitsubishi joined the alliance to form Renault Nissan Mitsubishi alliance. Renault owns 43.4 % voting stake of Nissan while Nissan hold 15% of non-voting stake in Renault. Nissan owns 34% controlling stake in Mitsubishi Motors. Till 2020 Nissan leaf was the highest selling electric car in the world until overtaken by Tesla model 3. Renault Nissan Mitsubushi alliance was over looked by Carlos Ghosn who has been in being in the news for the wrong reasons. Nissan owns luxury brand Infiniti and Brand Datsun. Nissan GTR is a high performance sport car highly popular amongst Automotive Enthusiast. Now we move to the last of Japan’s Big 3 Honda.
Honda
Honda is another famous Japanese brand known worldwide. Honda is the world’s largest motorcycle manufacturer since 1959 and was world’s 4 largest car manufacturer in year 2019. Interestingly, Honda is world’s largest manufacturer of Internal Combustion Engines. Honda was started by Soichiro Honda. He was an engineer who with his passion and enthusiasm went on to build Honda Motors. Soichiro oversaw its expansion from a wooden shack manufacturing bicycle motors to a multinational automobile Giant. Honda started with motorcycle production and soon went into car manufacturing. Honda Civic is amongst popular Honda vehicle. Honda motorcycles are highly popular in India with every 1 in 2 motorcycle sold is a Honda. Honda owns luxury brand Acura.
