And then let’s talk about the latest controversy surrounding PewDiePie. Right, so earlier this week he posted a video titled “My Dog Cringes at TikToks” where he and his dog Maya reacted to TikToks he described as cringey. And one of the videos he included was by a creator named Scarlet May, who is deaf and often posts story time videos where she speaks and signs at the same time. And in this one, she is wearing long nails while telling told a story about ordering at a drive thru, And this was PewDiePie’s reaction to it: “So I was at the drive thru and they had the people who stand outside and take your order before you go up to the window, so I pull up and I roll my window down, and this lady….” “No, I’m not listening to this. She has your crazy nails, Maya! *Pewds takes dog and uses high pitched voice while swaying its arms to mock Scarlet* So anyway, what I did was, I went outside and then I peed and then I pooped a little and it was crazy! Sorry, Are my nails distracting you guys?” And this outraged a ton of people, But like some of these posts noted, PewDiePie does have a strong base of supporters, so it was not surprising that a ton of people came to his defense, essentially saying he was not making fun of her for being deaf or Black, but simply because he thought her nails were distracting, But tons of people pushing back against this, Now, that clip involving Scarlet May has since been removed from PewDiePie’s video, and both have issued a response to the situation. With Scarlet posting a TikTok saying: “I feel like it was very weird and very unnecessary but at the same time, I wasn’t surprised, I’m used to it. It’s been a big issue in the deaf community, I’ve been trying to normalize using nails while signing is normal, it’s okay, but then a big creator comes on here and puts us like, a million steps back. So it’s very frustrating.” “Maybe he didn’t know I was doing sign language, maybe he just didn’t like my long nails, that’s okay. A lot of people don’t like them, that’s fine, they’re not for you.” And adding while she tries to give him the benefit of the doubt, based on the way he mocked her voice and used his dog’s paws to mimic signing, she thinks that he knew. But with her also adding in the caption: “we all make mistakes hopefully he learns from this.” For his part, PewDiePie pinned a comment to his video saying: “Hey, just to clear a few things up: I edited out the clip with the girl that has the long nails. Had no clue she was deaf, but kinda dumb of me to not realize.. Still watching through the clip I only poked fun of her long nails. The voice I did for my dog is the same voice I’ve given her for years.” “and making my dog’s paws move was poking at people always dancing or doing some move on tiktok, which is an ongoing theme in the whole video). Anyway honest mistake, my bad.”
Scarlet also used to appear in the thumbnail for the video, but he has also edited that to take her out too.
